In the winter, it is still dark when he gets up,but during the rest of the year it is light. Billy must deliver the newspapers to the houses of people on his route in all kinds of weather. Billy earns about $ 70 per month, and he is saving some of the money to go to college. He spends the rest on records and clothes. Once a month,he has to collect money from his customers. Since many of them work during the day,Billy has to collect the money at night. Sometimes, when Billy is sick, his brother has to deliver the newspapers. Once,Billy's father had to help. Passage 2

Friends or contemporaries(同龄人)are a great influence on the actions, thoughts, and words of young people. This influence, known as peer pressure,is quite common among children. Why are children so easily affected by what their peers do,think,or say?

Most of us,children included, feel a strong need to be liked by others. We seek acceptance and friendship. In order to gain them,we act like our friends, and listen to their advice, whether or not it is helpful. Some of us even begin to think like our friends, sometimes at the expense of our own beliefs and values. An example that comes to mind is the young person who gets involved with drugs because his peer group is experimenting with them. Parents may try to exert pressure to keep him away from drugs, but frequently peer pressure is too great. This conflict between being

your own person and,at the same time, responding to the pressures of a group remains a problem for young people.

Passage 3

Background music may seem harmless, but it can have a powerful effect on those who hear it. Recorded background music first found its way into factories, shops and restaurants in the US. But it soon spread to other parts of the world. Now it is becoming increasingly difficult to go shopping or eat a meal without listening to music. To begin with, muzak(音乐广播网)was intended simply to create a soothing atmosphere.

Recently, however,it's become big business - thanks in part to recent research. Dr. Ronald Milliman,an American marketing expert, has shown that music can boost(促进)sales or increase factory production by as much as a third.

But,it has to be light music. A fast one has no effect at all on sales. Slow music can increase receipts by 38%. This is probably because shoppers slow down and have more opportunity to spot items they like to buy. Yet,slow music isn't always answer. Dr.Milliman found, for example, that in restaurants slow music meant customers took longer to eat their meals, which reduced overall sales. So restaurant owners might be well advised to play

up-tempo music to keep the customers moving - unless of course, the resulting indigestion leads to complaints!

41. The reason why background music is so popular is that ______.

[A] it is harmless everywhere [B] it can boost sales in all places [C] it can help to create a soothing atmosphere [D] it can help to have more meals 42. Background music means ______. [A] light music [B] slow music [C] fast music

[D] the music you are listening to while you are doing something

43. Restaurant owners complain about background music because

______. [A] it results in indigestion [B] it keeps customers moving

[C] it increases their sales [D] it decreases their sales

44. The word up-tempo music(para. 3 the last line but two) probably means ______. [A] slow music [B] light music

[C] fast music [D] classical music 45. According to this passage, we learned that ______ [A] Dr. Milliman made background music.

[B] background music spread to the world by Dr. Milliman.

[C] Dr. Milliman found fast music meant customers took longer to eat. [D] background music can have a powerful effect on some people.

Passage 1

Some people think they have an answer to the troubles of automobile crowding and dirty air in large cities. Their answer is bicycle,or bike.

In a great many cities, hundreds of people ride bicycles to work every day. In New York City, some bike riders have even formed a group called Bike for a Better City. They claim that if more people rode bicycles to work there would be fewer automobiles in the downtown section of the city and therefore less dirty air from car engines.

For several years this group has been trying to get the city government to help bicycle riders. For example, they want the city to draw special lanes - for bicycles only -on some of the main streets, because when bicycle riders must use the same lanes as cars, there are accidents. Bike for a Better City feels that if there were special lanes, more people would use bikes.

But no bicycle lanes have been drawn. Not everyone thinks it is a good idea. Taxi drivers don't like the idea - they say it will slow traffic. Some store owners on the main streets don't like the idea - they say that if there is less traffic, they will have less business. And more people live too far from downtown to travel by bike.

The city government has not yet decided what to do. It wants to keep everyone happy. On weekends,Central Park - the largest piece of open ground in New York - is closed to cars, and the roads may be used by bicycles only. But Bike for Better City says that this is not enough and keeps fighting to get bicycle lanes downtown. 31.The people in the group of Bike for a Better City _______. [A]

Patrick Carroll was a native of Ballihoy,in Ireland, and at the age of twenty-two,he joined the 7th Regiment of Fusiliers. He remained in this army for a period of seven years. After that he joined the navy. His unit was stationed at Woolwich;and the public house he frequently visited was kept by Mrs. Browning,a widow. He formed an idea that his attentions were not disagreeable to Mrs. Browning, and repeatedly asked her to marry him. It does not appear that she totally ignored his advances;but Carroll often got drunk and behaved in such a manner towards her as to cause her displeasure. She refused any longer to listen to his courtship.

On Sunday, the 26th of April,1835,he went to the public house and found that Mrs. Browning had some friends to tea,but he was not

invited. Some angry words were exchanged between them, and he was forced to leave the house. The next morning he returned, and demanded that he be permitted to say a few words to Mrs. Browning in private(私下). This was refused. Passage 3

In the United States, it is not customary to telephone someone very early in the morning. If you telephone him early in the day, while he is shaving or having breakfast, the time of the call shows that the matter is very important and requires immediate attention. The same meaning is attached to telephone calls made after 11:00pm. If someone receives a call during sleeping hours, he assumes it is a matter of life or death. The time chosen for the call communicates its importance.

If a late telephone call is regarded in the United States as a cause for concern, imagine the excitement and fear caused by a crowd of people arriving at the door at 2:00pm. On an island in the south Pacific, a plant manager from the United States had just such an experience. The natives of the island met one night to discuss a problem. When they arrived at a solution, they went to see the plant manager and woke him up to tell him what had been decided. Unfortunately, they did not know that it is a very serious matter to wake up Americans at such an hour. The plant manager, who did not understand the local culture, thought there was a fight and

called the police. It never occurred to him(or to the natives)that parts of the day have different meanings in different cultures. 41.According to the U.S. custom, what does a very early telephone call mean to an American? _______

Passage 1

One night when Mr. Robinson was asleep,he was woken up by some strange noise outside his house. Thieves. he thought. Jumping out of bed,

he took his gun and hurried to the bedroom window. The night was rather dark. But he could see a white shape. It looked like a man

in the garden. He pointed his gun at it,fired and went back to bed. Early in the morning,he went down to the garden. His shirt was hanging from a tree. He had washed it the day before and hung it on the tree to dry. It had a hole right through the middle. Mr. Robinson was really frightened out of his life when he saw it and began to tremble (颤抖). His neighbor arrived at that moment. How are you today,Mr. Robinson? he asked in an anxious voice. You don't look well.

I'm all right, thank you, said Mr. Robinson. But I'm lucky to be alive. You see that shirt there?

Yes? said the neighbor.

If I'd been wearing that shirt last night, said Mr. Robinson,I'd

be a dead man now.
