In November 1922, the explorer Howard Carter went to Egypt and found the

tomb of Tutankhamen. When he looked into the tomb for the first time, he

was amazed. The tomb was full of treasure. Soon, the treasure of Tutankhamen

was famous around the world.

Some people thought that it was dangerous to open the tombs of Egyptian

kings. They said that something terrible would happen. Soon after Carter

opened the tomb of Tutankhamen, terrible things did begin to happen. The same day he opened the tomb, a snake killed Carter’s pet bird.

An English man, Lord Carnarvon was very interested in ancient Egypt. He paid for Howard Carter’s work in Egypt. After Carter found the tomb, Carnarvon got a message from somebody in England. “Lord Ca rnarvon-do not enter the tomb,” the message said. This was in early 1923. But Carnarvon didn’t listen. He went to Egypt and saw the tomb. Two months later, on 5th April in Cairo, he died. Back in England, his pet dog, Susie, died on the same day. When the doctors looked at Carnarvon, they found mosquito(蚊子) bite on his left cheek(颊). The mummy(木乃伊) of King Tutankhamen had a mosquito bite on exactly the same part of his face. All the newspapers in England said that Lord Carnarvon died because of the mummy’s curse(诅咒).

George Gould was Lord Carnarvon’s friend. Gould traveled to Egypt the same year. When he arrived, he went to look at the tomb. The next day, he fell ill and died. Soon, there were more stories about people becoming ill suddenly and dying. Nobody knows what really happened.
