You can't always predict a heavy rain or remember your umbrella. But designer Mikhail Belyaev doesn't think that forgetting to check the weather forecast before heading out should result in you getting wet. That's why he created Lampbrella, a lamp post with its own rain-sensing umbrella.

The designer says he came up with the idea after watching people get wet on streets in Russia. “Once, I was driving on a central Saint Petersburg street and saw the street lamps lighting up people trying to hide from the rain. I thought it would be appropriate to have a canopy(伞篷)built into a street lamp,” he said.

The Lampbrella is a standard-looking street lamp fitted with an umbrella canopy. It has a built-in electric motor which can open or close the umbrella on demand. Sensors(传感器)then ensure that the umbrella offers pedestrians shelter whenever it starts raining.

In addition to the rain sensor, there's also a 360° motion sensor on the fiberglass street lamp which detects whether anyone is using the Lampbrella. After three minutes of not being used the canopy is closed.

According to the designer, the Lampbrella would move at a relatively low speed, so as not to cause harm to the pedestrians. Besides, it would be grounded to protect from possible lightning strike. Each Lampbrella would offer enough shelter for several people. Being installed(安装) at 2 meters off the ground, it would only be a danger for the tallest of pedestrians.

While there are no plans to take the Lampbrella into production, Belyaev says he recently introduced his creation to one Moscow Department, and insists his creation could be installed on any street where a lot of people walk but there are no canopies to provide shelter.

21. For what purpose did Belyaev create the Lampbrella? A. To predict a heavy rain. B. To check the weather forecast. C. To protect people from the rain. D. To remind people to take an umbrella.

22. What do we know from Belyaev's words in Paragraph 2? A. His creation was inspired by an experience. B. It rains a lot in the city of Saint Petersburg. C. Street lamps are protected by canopies. D. He enjoyed taking walks in the rain.

23. Which of the following shows how the Lampbrella works? A. motor→ canopy→ sensors B. sensors→ motor→ canopy C. motor→ sensors→ canopy D. canopy→ motor→ sensors 24. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?

A. The designer will open a company to promote his product. B. The Lampbrella could be put into immediate production. C. The designer is confident that his creation is practical. D. The Lampbrella would be put on show in Moscow.

Walking down a path through some woods in Georgia, I saw a small pool of water ahead on the path. I angled my direction to go around it on the part of the path that wasn't covered by water or mud. As I reached the pool, I was suddenly attacked!

Yet I did nothing for the attack. It was so unpredictable and from somewhere totally unexpected. I was surprised as well as unhurt though I had been struck four or five times. I backed up a foot and my attacker stopped attacking me. Had I been hurt I wouldn't have found it amusing. And I was laughing. After all, I was being attacked by a butterfly!

Having stopped laughing, I took a step forward. My attacker rushed me again. He charged towards me at full speed, attempting to hurt me but in vain. For a second time, I took a step backwards while my attacker paused. I wasn't sure what to do. After all, it's just not everyday that one is attacked by a butterfly. I stepped back to look the situation over. My attacker moved back to land on the ground. That's when I discovered why my attacker was charging me only moments earlier. He had a mate and she was dying.

Sitting close beside her, he opened and closed his wings as if to fan her. I could only admire the love and courage of that butterfly in his concern for his mate. He had taken it up on himself to attack me for his mate's sake , even though she was clearly dying and I was so large. He did so just to give her those extra few precious moments of life, should I have been careless enough to step on her. His courage in attacking something thousands of times larger and heavier than himself just for his mate's safety seemed admirable. I couldn't do anything other than reward him by walking on the more difficult side of the pool. He had truly earned those moments to be with her, undisturbed.

Since then, I've used that butterfly’s courage as an inspiration and to remind

myself that good things are worth fighting for.

25.The writer changed his direction while walking down a path because he want__________.

A. To get close to a butterfly. B. To escape a sudden attack. C. To look over the bad situation. D. To avoid getting his shoes dirty.

26. What made the man feel funny?

A. Making the attacker pause. B. Being stepped on by his mate. C. Being attacked by a butterfly. D. Discovering the angry butterfly.

27.Which of the following words can best describe the butterfly?

A. careless B. amusing C. aggressive D. courageous 28. From this experience the man learned_____.

A. how he should deal with attacks B. how to deal with challenges in his life C. people should protect butterflies D. people should show sympathy to the weak

C

Meeting people from another culture can be difficult. From the beginning, people may send the wrong signal (信号). Or they may pay no attention to signals from another person who is trying to develop a relationship.

Different cultures emphasize (强调) the importance of relationship building to a greater or lesser degree. For example, business in some countries is not possible until there is a relationship of trust. Even with people at work, it is necessary to spend a lot of time in \

any job. In many European countries -- like the UK or France -- people

find it easier to build up a lasting working relationship at restaurants or caf6s rather than at the office.

Talk and silence may also be different in some cultures. I once made a speech in Thailand. I had expected my speech to be a success and start a lively discussion; instead there was an uncomfortable silence. The people present just stared at me and smiled. After getting to know their ways better, I realized that they thought I was talking too much. In my own culture, we express meaning mainly through words, but people there sometimes feel too many words are unnecessary.

Even within Northern Europe, cultural differences can cause serious problems. Certainly, English and German cultures share similar values; however, Germans prefer to get down to business more quickly. We think that they are rude. In fact, this is just because one culture starts discussions and makes decisions more quickly.

People from different parts of the world have different values, and sometimes

these values are quite against each other. However, if we can understand

them better, a multicultural environment (多元文化环境) will offer a wonderful chance for us to learn from each other.

29. The author mentions his experience in Thailand to show that _________ A. the English prefer to make long speeches B. too many words are of no use

C. people from Thailand are quiet and shy by nature D. even talk and silence can be culturally different

30. According to the text, how can people from different cultures understand each other better?

A. By sharing different ways of life. B. By accepting different habits. C. By recognizing different values. D. By speaking each other' s languages.

31. What would be the best title for the text?

A. Multicultural Environment. B. Cross-Cultural Differences. C. How to Understand Each Other. D. How to Build Up a Relationship.

D

Ask someone what they have done to help the environment recently and they will almost certainly mention recycling. Recycling in the home is very important of course. However, being forced to recycle often means we already have more material than we need. We are dealing with the results of that over-consumption in the greenest way possible, but it would be far better if we did not need to bring so much material home in the first place.

The total amount of packaging increased by 12% between 1999 and 2005. It now makes up a third of a typical household’s waste in the UK. In many supermarkets nowadays food items are packaged twice with plastic and cardboard.

Too much packaging is doing serious damage to the environment. The UK, for example, is running out of it for carrying this unnecessary waste. If such packaging is burnt, it gives off greenhouse gases which go on to cause the greenhouse effect. Recycling helps, but the process itself uses energy. The solution is not to produce such items in the first place. Food waste is a serious problem, too. Too many supermarkets encourage customers to buy more than they need. However, a few of them are coming round to the idea that this cannot continue , encouraging customers to reuse their plastic bags, for example.

But this is not just about supermarkets. It is about all of us. We have learned to associate packaging with quality. We have learned to think that something unpackaged is of poor quality. This is especially true of food. But is also applies to a wide range of consumer products, which often have far more packaging than necessary.

There are signs of hope. As more of us recycle, we are beginning to realise just how much unnecessary material We are collecting. We need to face the wastefulness of our consumer culture, but we have a mountain to climb.

32. What does the underlined phrase “over-consumption” refer to?

A. Using too much packaging. B. Recycling too many wastes.

C. Making more products than necessary. D. Having more material than is needed.

33. The author uses figures in Paragraph 2 to show _______.

A. the tendency of cutting household waste B. the increase of packaging recycling C. the rapid growth of super markets D. the fact of packaging overuse 34. According to the text, recycling ______.

A. helps control the greenhouse effect B. means burning packaging for energy C. is the solution to gas shortage D. leads to a waste of land

35. What can we learn from the last paragraph?

A. Fighting wastefulness is difficult. B. Needless material is mostly recycled. C. People like collecting recyclable waste. D. The author is proud of their consumer culture. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
