T: Yesterday I asked you to find more idioms and proverbs. Who would like to share yours with us?

S1: Be the apple of someone's eye Picture:

Meaning:

Be loved very much by someone.

If someone is the apple of your eye, you think he/she is very important to you, and you love him/her very much.

This idiom is used especially when someone is loved by an older member of his/her family. Example:

1 / 7

Erika is Mark's only granddaughter, and she's the apple of his eye. Sarah's only son was the apple of her eye.

S2: Couch potato Meaning:

A person who spends a lot of idle time sitting and watching television

If a person is a couch potato, he/she is not active and spends most of his/her time sitting and watching TV. He/she doesn't do anything productive. Example:

School children don't play outside as much as before. Many of them are overweight couch potatoes.

Don't be a couch potato! You're just wasting your time

T: There is a new idiom: Mouse potato. Who can guess its meaning?

S3: I guess it means a person who spends a great deal of time using a computer T: Good! Who would liker to introduce some proverbs? S4: A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. Meaning:

You use this proverb to say it is better to accept something that you have or you can use now than to try to get something better that you might not be able to obtain. Sometimes people just say, \is worth two in the bush,\you have than to risk losing it by trying to get something better you may not succeed in getting. Example:

If I were you, I'd accept the job. It might not be the best job for you, but a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.

S5: Don't cross your bridges before you come to them. Meaning:

You use this proverb to tell someone not to worry about something until it actually

2 / 7

happens.

People often say \not worry about the particular possible problem until it actually appears. Example:

A: Our proposal is ready, but what if the committee doesn't accept it?

B: Don't cross your bridges before you come to them. We will see what happens then. A (woman): I'll introduce you to my parents tonight.

B (the woman's boyfriend): Okay.., but they might not like me. A: Don't worry. We'll cross that bridge when we come to it S6: The early bird catches the worm. Meaning:

This proverb is used to tell you to act early or right now to be successful.

If someone says, \early bird catches the worm,\he/she means that if you do something early or before anyone else, you will have an advantage and be successful. Example:

The early bird catches the worm! Don't miss this year's best deal! The sale will start on Thursday, and the store opens at 5:00 a.m.

Though you have more than 6 months before you leave, start looking for good deals on airline tickets and reserve your seats early. The early bird catches the worm. T: Excellent! Please remember idioms and proverbs are part of the English culture. Learn as many idioms and proverbs as you can and you will have a good knowledge of English. Good luck to your English study.
